Gladys C. Walaker
Gladys Caroline (Gronbeck) Walaker of Leonard, ND passed away on June 13, 2013. She was born on January 13, 1920 to Arne and Josephine (Vangsness) Gronbeck. Gladys grew up on the family farm south of Leonard. On September 4, 1938 she married Ray E. Walaker at the home of her grandmother Elizabeth Vangsness in Sheldon, ND.
Gladys and Ray settled in Leonard where they raised three sons: Dennis, Wallace, Ray Jr., and daughter, Renae. At first, Ray and Gladys ran a cream station, purchasing cream and eggs from the farmers, and transporting them to Fairmont Creamery in Moorhead. Later, they ran a Standard Oil Bulk fuel business along with a small service station. Gladys frequently ran the station while Ray delivered fuel to farms in the area.
Gladys loved and was an active member of the Helendale Lutheran Church in rural Leonard for nearly all her life. She also volunteered at the Leonard Library for many years. Gladys was a great cook and enjoyed preparing special foods for family occasions and lutefisk for Christmas dinner. She always had sugar cookies and other home baked treats on hand for friends who stopped by for a visit.
Gladys had a great sense of humor and enjoyed participating in the annual Leonard Fall Festival parade. She always dressed in comical costumes and persuaded friends and relatives to participate with her on her decorated float. When Halloween, her favorite holiday, came around each year, she dressed as a witch to greet children as they came to her door trick-or-treating.
She enjoyed weekend camping trips with her family and especially liked camping in the Minnesota lake country where they would pitch their tent, build a campfire, and enjoy fishing and the peaceful surroundings. In later years she had the thrill of traveling to California, Maryland, Connecticut and New York where she spent time with her grandchildren. The highlight of her travels was a trip to Norway with Ray to visit her ancestors' and Ray's relatives.
Gladys is survived by her son Dennis (Mary) Walaker of Fargo and daughter, Renae (Scott) Wenner of New Canaan, CT; grandchildren, Shannon Walaker of St. Petersburg, FL, Erin (Thomas) Hall of Fargo, Christopher (Whitney) Wenner of Newport Beach, CA, Kate Wenner and fiance Jared Carey of West Deptford, NJ; and three great grandsons, Samuel and Maxwell Hall and Hudson Wenner. She is also survived by her brother, Arnold and wife Darlene Gronbeck of Moorhead and Doris (wife of Arnfred) Gronbeck of West Fargo.
Gladys was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Ray; sons Wallace and Ray Jr.; and siblings Frank and his wife Corinne Gronbeck, Arnfred Gronbeck, Eunice and her husband Merle Nygard, Lucille and her husband Leo Bartholomay, Ernest and his wife Ella Gronbeck.
Her family would like to extend their thanks for the care she received while living at Bethany on University in Fargo and also Hospice of the Red River Valley for their assistance.
