Bruce Rankin, former Knox County commissioner, dies

Bruce Rankin, who was among the first to serve on the new Knox County Board of Commissioners in 1980, died Thursday of a heart attack at St. Mary's Medical Center. He was 78.

Mr. Rankin founded Rankin Sign Co. in 1953 and remained its owner until it was sold in 1963 to Mooney Broadcasting Co.

Before he was elected to the commission, Mr. Rankin, a Republican, represented the 3rd District on Knox County Court from 1970 to 1976.

He was a member of the Metropolitan Planning Commission, and from 1975 to '76 he was chairman of the committee to reapportion the County Court districts.

During World War II, he served four years in the Army Air Force with overseas duty in China, Burma and the Indian Theater.

Mr. Rankin was a former member of the Greater Knoxville Chamber of Commerce and had been active in the Scottish Rite and Kerbela Temple, the American Legion Post No. 2 and the Charles H. McKinney Masonic Lodge.

He also was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Since 1989, Mr. Rankin had suffered from the debilitating effects of a massive stroke.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia; sons Bob Rankin, of Salt Lake City; Jim Rankin and John Rankin, both of Knoxville; and daughters Judy Rankin and Janice Erickson, both of Farmington, Utah.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Berry's Funeral Home on Chapman Highway.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Berry's Chapel, followed by burial at Highland Memorial Cemetery.
