Wilfred H. Johnson, 68, 20 East Main St., Cambridge City, died Saturday, Dec. 5, at Reid Hospital in Richmond.
He was born in New Castle and graduated from Lewisville High School in 1942. He served in the United States Army Company B, 3205th Quartermaster Service Battalion from 1942 to 1945 participating in the invasion of Normandy on D Day in 1944.
Wilfred later graduated from Rex Business Machines in Elmira, N.Y. He owned and operated Johnson Auto Sales for 35 years and Johnson's Salt of Cambridge City.
He was a former member of the Cambridge City Town Council serving as police commissioner. He was currently a member of the Western Wayne Sewage Disposal Board. He drove a school bus for Western Wayne schools and served on the State school bus Commission.
He served on several state legislation committees and also served on several state government task forces committees. He was a former member of the Junior chamber of commerce and a member of the Cambridge City Chamber of Commerce. He was also a member of the Lawrence H. Bertsch American Legion Post #169, the Cambridge City Evening Kiwanis Club, having 32 years of perfect attendance. He was a member of the V.F.W. and a member of the Dunreith Christian Church.
He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Dorothy Johnson, one daughter, Jane Lamb of Centerville; four sons, Major Carl Johnson of Tacoma Washington, John Johnson of Mason, Ohio, Jeff Johnson of Indianapolis and Bruce Johnson of Cambridge City; one sister Mary Lou Cox of Lewisville; one brother Wendell Johnson of Lewisville; and eight grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Norma Tyner Johnson.
Funeral services were held at Waskom-Howard-Fisher Capital Hill chapel Tuesday, December 8 with Steve Lamb, John Johnson and Steve Abernathy officiating.
Burial was in Riverside Cemetery and military rites were held by the Lawrence H. Bertsch American Legion Post #169.
