Leo V. Henderson, age 76, of Cambridge City, passed away on Tuesday, January 12, 2010 in Indianapolis. He was born on May 7, 1933 in Covington, Virginia to Carl D. Henderson Sr. and Nanny (Dressler) Henderson.
Leo was a 1951 graduate of Lincoln H. S. and received his Associates Degree from Ivy Tech. He was a proud member of the of the U.S. Army, 2nd Armored Division "Hell on Wheels", 42nd Army Infantry Battalion during the Korean War. Leo served on the Cambridge City Town board for 12 years during the 60's and 70's and was the city's police commissioner. He loved serving Cambridge City and during the city's 125th Anniversary, he played Sheriff Matt Dillon in the town play during Canal Days.
The Henderson family became members of 1st Baptist Church of Cambridge City in 1965. Leo has served on the church board for over 40 years and has done every conceivable duty at the church. Leo owned two businesses in Cambridge City - Henderson Television Sales & Service for over 25 years and then around 1980 opened Leo Henderson Insurance Agency. He was past president and member of the Richmond Life Underwriters. His proud commitment to his country continued as he is the current Commander for LeRoy Tout American Legion Post #338.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia (Seely) Henderson who together celebrated 50 years of marriage on September 8, 2009; Three children, Michael D. (Ellen) Henderson of Chesterfield, MO, Matthew L. Henderson of Minneapolis, MN and Stephanie L. (Mark) Peterson of Highlands Ranch, CO; Eight grandchildren; a Brother, Carl D. (Marge) Henderson, Jr. of Centerville and a sister, Reola (Dick) Drennen of Cambridge City.
Friends may call at Waskom Capitol Hill Chapel in Cambridge City on Sunday, January 17, 2010 from 2:00 until 4:00 PM. Funeral services will be held at 1st Baptist Church of Cambridge City on Monday, January 18, 2010 at 10:00 AM with Pastor Dan Jones and Mr. Mark Peterson officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Cambridge City.
Memorial contributions may be made to the 1st Baptist Church building fund.
Leo served during the Korean War, Pfc. U. S. Army.
Leo, LUTCF, sold insurance for American Family Insurance for many years. Leo was past president of the Richmond Area Life Underwriters Association. He also was invited to instruct a Business Law Class on Auto Renters & Life Insurance in Centerville. In 2002 Leo was congratulated by Vice President of Sales of the American Family Insurance company for the Millionaires Club.
He also had a TV repair shop, TV Sales and Service, many years ago selling televisions, antennas, towers, rotors and accessories.
Leo also served on the Cambridge City Town Board.
Leo was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church where he served on several boards and held offices.
Leo received the "Outstanding Member of the Year" plaque from the American Legion Post #338 in May 2003. He served as Legion Post Commander.
