Patricia O'Neil, 81, who taught for 18 years at Hollin Meadows Elementary School in Alexandria, died Jan. 21 at the Fairfax retirement community at Fort Belvoir.

The former Fairfax County resident had complications from normal pressure hydrocephalus, a neurological disorder, said her daughter Ellen O'Neil Fuller.

Mrs. O'Neil retired in the late 1980s from Hollin Meadows, where she taught third and fourth grades. During her husband's Navy career, she also taught in schools on the East Coast and in Guam.

Patricia Ann Hogan was a native of Troy, N.Y., and a 1951 mathematics graduate of the College of Saint Rose in Albany, N.Y. She received a master's degree in elementary education from the State University of New York in 1953.

Mrs. O'Neil volunteered in Northern Virginia as an English-language tutor and with organizations including Meals on Wheels and United Community Ministries.

Her husband of 57 years, retired Navy Capt. Raymond O'Neil, died in 2011. Survivors include five children, Ellen O'Neil Fuller of Virginia Beach, Jeff O'Neil of Richmond, Mike O'Neil of Alexandria, Mary Beth Lane of McLean and Bill O'Neil of Lilburn, Ga.; two sisters; 14 grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
