Oscar W. Johnson, 83, of Rt. 1, longtime farmer and area tax consultant, died Monday afternoon at a local hospital of a heart condition.

A life-long resident of the surrounding area, he farmed and raised livestock and developed many specialized farm machines. A tax consultant for the Farm Bureau, he was named Bonneville County Grassman of the Year and was active in the Farm Bureau.

While living in the Shelley area, from 1935 to 1940, he served on the Shelley school board and also Bonneville School District 93 and Lincoln school boards.

The son of Gustaf and Anna Sofia Christenson Johnson, he was born in Idaho Falls Sept. 22, 1894. He attended grade school and high school here and attended the University of Idaho.

Sept. 12, 1917, he was married to Lucina Weaver at the Logan LDS Temple and the couple resided at the New Sweden area until 1935, when they moved to Shelley. In 1940, they moved to Menan and in 1943, settled at Lincoln where they have resided until now.

A lifelong member of the LDS Church, he held office of high priest at the time of his death. He had served in all Church auxiliaries and was Bishop of the Lincoln Ward, and served as a counselor of the Stake Presidency. For many years he played the organ and directed church choirs and also played organ at many funerals.

For 28 years, he served as a temple officiator and was in the presidency of the visitors center at the Idaho Falls Temple.

Surviving him are his wife of Idaho Falls; five sons, Walden W. Johnson, Lin H. Johnson, Dr. Kim O. Johnson, and Bishop Tebbin G. Johnson all of Idaho Falls and Dr. Merle W. Johnson of Hesperia, Calif.; six daughters, Mrs. Earl (Beth) Tew of Shelley, Mrs. Robert L. (Gretchen) Egbert of Lincoln, Neb., Mrs. Jay Hamilton (Kirma) Smith of Kimberly, Mrs. Jack (Peggy) Scott of Idaho Falls, Mrs. Dean (Linda) Mansfield of Midvale, Utah, and Mrs. Ronald (Dixie) Johnson of Milo; a brother, Vernon S. Johnson of Idaho Falls; two sisters, Mrs. Shay (Rhoda) Hampton and Sofia Johnson both of Idaho Falls; 78 grandchildren and 51 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, six brothers and a sister.

Services will be Friday at 1 p.m. at the Idaho Falls East Stake Building, 1860 Kearney, with Bishop Tebbin G. Johnson of the Lincoln First Ward officiating. Friends may call at the Wood Funeral Home Thursday from 7 to 10 p.m. and at the Church an hour prior to services Friday. Burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery.
