William Clarence Callahan was born on June 10, 1875, in Jackson County, Indiana. He was the son of Jeremiah and Melvina Lynch Callahan.

 

He may have had two siblings: Laura A. Callahan and Clara Lena Callahan. 

 

His mother died around 1880. She was born about 1843.

 

Jeremiah Callahan married two other women: Rhoda Lynch (1857 – 1888), who bore a daughter Frandie Callahan; and Frances C. Weinegar (1866 – 1924), who had two children: Elsie M. Callahan and Lewis Jennings Callahan.

 

A marriage license announcement was published in The Daily Republican (Seymour, Indiana) on July 14, 1898, page 2, for William C. Callahan to Ollie Brooks. They were actually married on July 10, 1898, in Jackson County. 

 

They had two children: Laura Callahan and Ezra Leroy Callahan. According to the 1910 Federal census, the family was living in Hamilton township, Jackson County, Indiana.

 

Sarah Viola "Ollie" Brooks Callahan died on December 15, 1915. 

 

On August 12, 1916, William C. Callahan and Minnie Lafary (Laugherty), in Indiana. Their marriage license was announced in the Evansville Courier and Press (Evansville, Indiana) on August 13, 1916, Sunday, page 12. The text stated: William C. Callahan, 38, miner, Sullivan, to Minnie Lafary, 38, Slaughersville, Kentucky.

 

In the 1920 Federal census, William and Minnie Callahan were living in Louisville, Kentucky. He was working as a laborer in a lumberyard. He was 43 years old; Minnie was 40 years old and they had Minnie's two children, May Lafary (Laugherty), age 16 and Homer Lafary (Laugherty), age 12, as well as Ezra Callahan, age 16, living with them.

William C. Callahan, 936 S. 33rd Street, died at 11;30 a.m. Sunday in Saint Joseph Hospital after four months' illness. He was born in Jackson County, Indiana, June 10, 1875, and came here 26 years ago from Detroit. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Howard Mahan, South Bend; a son, Ezra, in Florida; three stepsons, Lawrence, Homer and Guy Laugherty, Detroit; a stepdaughter Mrs. Mae Adams, Louisville, Kentucky; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Friends may call after 7 p.m. today at the Hollis Funeral Hoe where the funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday. Rev. Edgar Carswell will officiate and burial will be in Acme Cemetery, near Seymour, Indiana.

William Callahan Dies – Burial Set at Acme

 

William Callahan, 80, a native of Jackson county, died Sunday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Howard Mahan, in South Bend.

 

He was born in Jackson county in June 1875, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Callahan. He was married to Ola Brooks on July 10, 1898. She died in January 1916. Many friends in Jackson county mourn his death.

 

Besides the daughter with whom he made his home, he is survived by a son, Ezra Leroy Callahan, of Jacksonville, Florida, three grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Mrs. Lawrence Hattabaugh, of this city is a sister-in-law

 

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at South Bend and the funeral party will come to Jackson county where graveside services will be conducted Thursday afternoon at the Acme Cemetery about 2 o'clock.

William Callahan, 80, native and for many years a resident of Jackson county, died Sunday at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Howard Mahan, in South Bend.

 

Funeral rites are to be held Wednesday and burial will be at Acme Cemetery about 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon.

 

A son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Callahan, the deceased was born in Jackson county in June 1875. His wife, whom he married in 1889, and who died in 1916, was the former Ola Brooks.

 

Surviving in addition to the daughter at whose home he died and with whom he lived for a number of years, is a son, Ezra Leroy Callahan, a resident of Jacksonville, Florida; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
