John Carpenter, age 83, died on February 2, 2011 in his home. He was preceded in death by his wife, Janet May Cunningham Carpenter. He is survived by his daughters, Michelle Hathaway of Palm Springs and Cathy Edwards of La Quinta; his granddaughter, Genevieve Hathaway-Lopez of Indio and two brothers, Bill of California and Bobby of North Carolina. John was born in Parsons, Kansas in April of 1927. He served honorably in the U.S. Navy during WWII and the U.S. Army during the Korean War, achieving the rank of sergeant first class. After his military service he worked a variety of jobs, including brakeman, butter-maker, bartender and painter. Before his retirement he was awarded Employee of the Year by Waste Management of the Desert. Private interment will be held at Coachella Valley Cemetery. The family respectfully requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the charity of your choice or to an animal charity.
