Milwaukee Sentinel, Wed. June 2, 1943, p. 16A:3. Robert G. Bates, 76, who took over one of Milwaukee's first radio stores when his son, the late Capt. Clarence F. Bates, became an aviator, died of a heart attack Tuesday in his shop, 1127 W. Wells St. Mr. Bates, born in England, came to Milwaukee 42 years ago. His son, Clarence, established the Bates Radio co., which Mr. Bates took over about 15 years ago when his son became a pilot with the Northwest Airlines. He was killed in a plane crash at St. Paul. Surviving is a daughter, Mrs. Charles Schweisthal, Milwaukee.

Bates, 76, who took over one of Milwaukee's first radio stores when his son, the late Capt. Clarence Frederick Bates, became an aviator, was found dead in the radio repair shop and store at 1127 W. Wells st. Tuesday morning. Death was attributed to a heart ailment. Mr. Bates was born in England and came to this country about 50 years ago, first settling in Albany, N.Y. He came to Milwaukee about 46 years ago and was formerly in the automobile business here. His son, Clarence, established and was president of the Bates Radio Co., formerly at 513-515 Van Buren st. It was while in this business that he became interested in aviation and finally became a pilot with the Northwest Airlines. His father then took over the radio store about 15 years ago. Capt. Bates was the pilot of the Northwest Airlines plane which carried 14 persons to death in a crash near Moorhead, Minn. He was the only survivor. He later was killed in a plane crash at the St. Paul (Minn.) airport. Mr. Bates is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Charles Schweisthal of Milwaukee. He made his home at the 1127 W. Wells st. address.
