Ms. Burnett was born October 9, 1939, in San Antonio, Tx to Hugh E. (Jack) and Elvira (Al) C. Burnett Jr. Her family moved to Brownsville, Tx after WWII. She graduated from Brownsville High School then continued her education at Texas Women's University in Denton, Tx. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Art Design. Ms. Burnett worked in North Dakota until she moved to Boston to continue to study art at Boston University. Her love for teaching began in 1968 when she was assigned as a teacher by the Peace Corps to Somalia. After her service in Somalia, she returned home to Brownsville Texas where she lived and taught for 36 years. Ms. Burnett began teaching for BISD in the migrant school programs and then transferred to Garden Park Elementary where she taught first and second grade for over 30 yrs until her retirement in 2006.
Ms. Burnett loved to travel and visited many countries on 5 continents. She loved the theater and enjoyed attending Broadway shows in NYC and London. For many years, she worked with community theaters in Brownsville and Harlingen as a set designer. Ms. Burnett also loved reading and collecting books in her favorite genres; science fiction, classic literature and history. She was passionate about her garden and spent many hours designing and planting it.
Ms. Burnett was preceded in death by her parents, Hugh E. (Jack) and Elvira (Al) C. Burnett and her sister Hazel Burnett Francis.
She is survived by her friends Shelton Coleman, Carol Hudson, her brother in law Bill Francis(Vicki) and extended family in California.
Interment will be in the family plot at Mission Park Burial South, San Antonio, Tx. At her request services will not be held. Memorial donations may be made to donors' favorite charities.
