History - Mary Humphery Poulsen was born in Combath, Wales, February 4, 1848 the daughter of David and Mary Ann Mathews Humpherys.
When she was two years old her father was killed in a coal mine accident, leaving her mother alone with three small children. Two of the children died at an early age. Her mother later married again.
After her mother's death at the age of twenty one. She was baptized 0n May 25, 1869, and confirmed a member of the Latter-day Saints Church.
In August 1869 she came to America. A short time later she met James Poulsen and they married Feb. 14, 1870 in the Salt Lake City Endowment House.
In the spring of 1870, they moved to Paris, Idaho. The home was small but well kept. The winters were long and hard and the planting and growing seasons short.
They moved to Wardboro. While James was out with the cattle the house caught on fire. She took quilts from the beds and wrapped the children in them and went for James. Among the burned possessions was her Mother's old trunk containing her most prized possessions she had brought from Wales.
The following spring they moved to Ovid until James could build a new home.
She was an ambitious woman. Besides carrying for her family, keeping up her home and working at the church, she would cord and spin wool for other families.
She was a loving, patient Mother of 13 children. Although she endured numerous hardships, she was never heard to utter a word of complaints.
She died August 28, 1929, at her home in Liberty.
