Former Chief Justice Robert E. Davis died Wednesday, August 4, 2010, at his Leavenworth home surrounded by his loving family. Justice Davis is survived by his children, Edward Davis and daughter-in-law Tiffany Ghiglia of Los Angeles, Rachel Evans and son-in-law Ben of Seattle, Patrick Davis of Seattle, Carolyn Davis of Seattle and Brian Jones of the home; and one grandson, Sahale, son of Rachel and Ben Evans.
He was born in Topeka on August 28, 1939, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Homer Davis.
Chief Justice Davis had been a member of the Supreme Court since 1993. Before his appointment to the Supreme Court, he served eight years on the State Court of Appeals and before that as a judge of the Leavenworth County District Court. He also served a term as Leavenworth County Attorney. He announced his retirement from the Kansas Supreme Court Tuesday after 17 years of service, having been Chief Justice since January 2009.
After leaving military service, Chief Justice Davis engaged in private practice with his father, Homer, in the firm of Davis & Davis (later Davis, Davis, McGuire, and Thompson) in Leavenworth from 1967 to 1984, when he was appointed Associate District Judge of the First Judicial District of Kansas. While in private practice he served as Leavenworth County Attorney from 1981 to 1984. He also served as Magistrate Judge in Leavenworth County from 1969 to 1976. After serving as an Associate District Judge for two years, Chief Justice Davis was appointed to the Kansas Court of Appeals in 1986, where he served until appointment to the Supreme Court in 1993.
Prior to entering private practice, Chief Justice Davis served as a Captain in the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General's Corps, including foreign service as trial counsel in the Republic of Korea and as United States Appellate Counsel in Washington D.C. from 1964 to 1967. He received a BA degree from Creighton University, Omaha, and a law degree from Georgetown University Law School, Washington, D.C.
Chief Justice Davis had a distinguished public career, but those who knew him well know that he took just as much pride in his history as an attorney with truly wide-ranging experience in the law, ranging from vigorously representing the humblest clients of the small town Davis Firm, to being a formidable prosecutor who never lost a trial, to culminating his career at its pinnacle in Topeka. Beyond his professional career, Bob was prouder still of his children's accomplishments, and of the close and nurturing relationships he maintained with each of them until his death. In the months prior to his death his life was enriched by getting to know his active toddler grandson, Sahale, singing to him and telling him rhymes and stories. Those fortunate enough to have known Bob Davis will remember his genuine warmth, compassion and down to earth wisdom.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jana D. Jones, M.D.
