On June 21, 1918, Cecil enlisted in the U.S. Army. His unit received training at Parris Island, South Carolina with the 13th Regiment of the U.S. Marines, and subsequently, Cecil was sent to France for additional training. Cecil was killed September 28, 1918, two days after arriving in Brest, France. His body was returned to Highland Cemetery in Durant, Oklahoma for burial.
