1900 census shows he resided in the Hilltop District of Charles County, Maryland. However, other records indicate that he owned and resided at the Rosemary Lawn estate in nearby Welcome from the early 1870s until his death in 1916. He was born in England, United Kingdom. He was associated with the Cadeby Hall estate there. His rather plain marker belies the fact that he was a man of wealth and integrity, a prosperous farmer, and fitting member of his community in his time. In fact, the prior owner of the estate had sold it to Mr. Dows because he could no longer make the money he once did. The Civil War had ended just a few years prior and with it the slaves that had been used to run the farm were freed. Mr. Dows did make the estate once again a very productive farm. He did not use any slave labor nor did he believe in using any. His relatives have confirmed that as well.
He most likely was not buried on the Rosemary Lawn estate that he owned because land records show that the Dows never got title to the little cemetery on the estate (when they bought the land). The cemetery is about an half-acre or so. It was kept by the prior owners so that their heirs would always have access rights; today that worry is moot as Maryland by law gives perpetual access to relatives no matter who actually owns the cemetery.
You can see that cemetery by looking up Rosemary Lawn family cemetery in Charles county, Md.

This fellow seems to have been one of the role models that much of American life is believed to be have been back in his time.In short, he was good at what he did. Don't let the simple stone fool you.|
