Death: Sep. 10, 1908

Emeline Covington Caudle was the seventh of thirteen children born to Elijah Covington (1794-1859) and his first wife Margaret Bailey (1795-1841) of Anson Co., NC. Her father was a cotton planter who at his death owned thirty-two enslaved African Americans. Emeline married twice. About 1852 she married Alexander Watson of Anson Co., and by him had one son: James Alexander (b. 1854). About 1857, after the death of her first husband, Emeline married as his second wife Ambrose Leonidas Caudle (1827-1891), a farmer in the community of Polkton, Anson. Co.. The couple raised a large family including: James B. (b. ca. 1857), Margaret Celeste (b. 1859), Theodosia E. (b.1860), Louisa (b. ca. 1863), Ambrose Leonidas Jr. (b. 1865), Emeline Drusilla (b.1867), John (ca. 1868), Abigail (b. 1870), Bijah Adolphus (b.1872), Daniel E. (ca. 1874), and Silvester E. (ca. 1877).

Death of Mrs. Emeline Caudle
Mrs. Emeline Caudle died at her home in Polkton Thursday morning in her 81st year. She had been twice married, the first time to the late Alexander Watson and from this union one son, Mr. J. A. Watson of Cheraw, was born. She next married the late Ambrose Caudle and from this union three daughters, Mrs. Docia Godwin of Charlotte, Misses Maggie and Emeline Caudle of Polkton and five sons, Messrs. A.L. and B.A. Caudle of Polkton, John Caudle of Cheraw, E.D. and E.S. Caudle of Charlotte, survive. Two brothers Dr. E.A. Covington of Wadesboro and Dr. Lemuel Covington of Cheraw and two sisters Mesdames Dan. E. and Samuel Gatewood of Wadesboro survive. Mr. James James Caudle of Greenville, S.C. is a stepson of the deceased.

For a long time before her death Mrs. Caudle had been a consistent member of the Polkton Baptist church. She was a sincere Christian woman and greatly loved by all who knew her. Her long life was full of good deeds.
She was buried in the Williams cemetery, Rev. J.B. Boyd conducting the funeral services. All of her children except Mrs. Godwin, who is sick in a hospital in Charlotte, were present with many relative[s] and friends.
[Obituary, The Ansonian (Wadesboro, NC), September 15, 1908, p.3]

Inexplicably, Emeline Caudle's tombstone erroneously notes her date of death as April 15, 1914.
