OBITUARY - ELIZA BRANNING.

Eliza, wife of Wm. Branning, and daughter of the late Bulkley Beardslee, of Indian Orchard, and sister of Hon. H. B. Beardslee, of Wilkesbarre, departed this life, at her home in Damascas township, where she has lived for forty six years, and raised a family of three sons and three daughters to honorable manhood and womanhood, Wednesday, May the 27th, at 11:30 p.m., after a severe illness of ten days; but in the final triumph, however, of victory, even in death, at the ripe age of sixty nine years, two months and four days. She was born in the township of Dyberry, March 23rd and was the oldest of a family of nine, of which there are five still living.

She was married to Wm. Branning, son of the late Jacob Branning, Jan. 3, 1839. In the winter of 1843 and 1844, she experienced religion, and ever after lived a most exemplary life. She was a woman of great faith in Christ, dying with the words of Job upon her lips: "I know that my Redeemer liveth." She was a woman most remarkable for integrity, honesty and veracity. No wrong in any way ever found philiation in her; her whole being was most firmly and rigidly set against it; yet she was most benevolent and kind to the weak and erring; her heart and hand and home were open to all; she was a good wife, and good mother, a good friend and good neighbor.

The death of such has a double sadness. It is sad because they cannot always remain with us; it is sad because they must leave us. Her death is certainly a most sad bereavement to her mourning husband, and a severe loss to her children and the community in which she lived so long. This loss was most strikingly shown by the many mourning friends and neighbors who followed her remains to the grave on Saturday last at 11 o'clock a.m., from her late home to Indian Orchard, where they deposited them with appropriate prayer and ceremonies, conducted by Rev. C. H. Fitzwilliam, pastor of the Damascus Baptist church, with the encouraging words: "Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten from the dead to their rest in peace."
