Benjamin was the son of Joseph Ellenwood and Abigail Bryant Lamson. To confuse things he married a woman by the same name, Abigail Lamson, perhaps a relative of his mothers. Benjamin and Abagail had 9 children; Jeremiah, Daniel, Benjamin, Samuel, Abagail, Elizabeth, Matilda, Sarah, and Mary "Polly".
He served in the Revolutionary War first enlisting May 1775 and served 8 months in Cpt. Archelaus Town's New Hampshire Company; at the expiration of this service, he re-enlisted and served twelve months in Capt. Jone's Company, Col. Reed's New Hampshire Regiment. He enlisted in July/August 1777 and served two to three months in Capt. Clark's New Hampshire Company, and was in the battle of Bennington and taking of Burgyne.
