Son of Thomas Gillespie and Susannah Barrowcliff. He was born in Tiverton, Devon, England and came to the United States in 1862. Prior to coming to the U.S. he married Susan Burgess on 24 Dec 1859. They had two children while living in England; Susan Anne and William Henry. After moving to Michigan they had two more children; Elizabeth and Louise.
