Birth: Oct. 29, 1832
Tennessee, USA

Husband of Louisa Unknown, father of James M. (b. 1855, Illinois) and Viola B. (b. 1857 Illinois). Present as Head of Household 1860 census, Belle Prairie, Livingston County, Illinois.

Son of James Cooper and Susanna (Susan) Travis. Paternal grandson of Nathaniel Cooper and Christiana Harris. Maternal grandson of Jeremiah Travis and Margaret Peak.

Sibling to:
Betsy J. Cooper b. 1831 Tennessee
James M. Cooper b. 29 Oct 1832 (Jeremiah's twin brother) b. Tennessee
Margaret A. b. 1835 Livingston County, Illinois
Rachel A. Cooper b. 1837 Livingston County, Illinois
William S. Cooper b. 1843 Livingston County, Illinois
John M. Cooper b. 1845 Livingston County, Illinois
Beryl T. Cooper b. 1849 Livingston County, Illinois

He enlisted on 01 September 1861 in the Union Army, 8th IL. Infantry, Co. H. He later transferred to the 11th IL Infantry Co. C., while his brother's James and William S. served in the 8th IL. Infantry.

Jeremiah was killed in action during the battle of Fort Donelson in Stewart County, Tennessee. It was during this battle the Union forces opened the Cumberland River as an avenue for the invasion of the south. The success elevated Brig. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant from an obscure and largely an unproven leader to the rank of major general, earning him the nickname "Unconditional Surrender" Grant in the process (using his first two initials, "U.S.").

Pvt Jeremiah Cooper (my 1st cousin, 5 times removed) fought valliantly for his country and ultimately gave the ultimate sacrifice.
