He owned a mill in the Scio area and was a member of Odd Fellows. He was the husband of Abigail M. (Parker) McCartney. They appear on the 1850 census in Wills, La Porte, Ind. He died of consumption/TB, which also killed his other 11 siblings.

Of these, only William and Mary married. Nathaniel's widow and family are on the 1860 Census in Chico Twp, Butte, Calif.
