One of 12 children of William C. and Margery McCartney of South Bend, Indiana, Nathaniel held Oregon Donation Land Claim #2167 near Scio, Oregon, in 1852. He owned a mill in the Scio area and was a member of Odd Fellows. He was the husband of Abigail M. (Parker) McCartney. They appear on the 1850 census in Wills, La Porte, Ind. He died of consumption/TB, which also killed his other 11 siblings.
Nathaniel was the father of William Henry Harrison McCartney, Mary Louisa McCartney, Benjamin Franklin McCartney, Albert McCartney, John Lyman McCartney and Thomas Nathaniel McCartney. Of these, only William and Mary married. Nathaniel's widow and family are on the 1860 Census in Chico Twp, Butte, Calif.
