Birth: Oct. 2, 1836
Hudson
Summit County
Ohio, USA
Death: May 10, 1919
Portland
Multnomah County
Oregon, USA

The son of abolitionist John Brown, Salmon Brown took an active part in the Pottawatomie Massacre in 1856 inwhich five pro-slavery settlers were hacked to death in Kansas. Salmon Brown was not present at the raid on Harper's Ferry where his brother was killed and his father captured and later hanged.

At the outbreak of the Civil War, Salmon enlisted in the Union army and served as an officer in the 96th New York Infantry. He resigned his commission after fellow officers felt the presence of John Brown's son in the ranks would lead to them being especially targeted by the enemy.

After the army Mr. Brown headed West and lived in California and Oregon and was a successful sheep rancher. He married Abbie Hinckley and they had ten children.

Late in life he was thrown from a horse and paralyzed from the waist down. He committed suicide by shooting himself in the head.
