John Jonas Lewis was the 3rd of twelve children born to James W. Lewis and Susan Clemmer Lewis. He married Emily Ester Ratchford on June 29, 1865. He enlisted as a volunteer in the Confederate Army on March 8, 1862 as a Private in Dallas, N.C. at the age of 17. He signed on for the duration of the war.
