Morris enlisted in the 7th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, June 20, 1861, at 21 years of age, during the Civil War. He was mustered into Company B as a corporal. Promoted to 2nd Lt. of Company H, November 12, 1862, and to 1st Lt. and to regimental Adjutant, December 1, 1862, he was wounded at the Battle of Ringold, Georgia, November 27, 1863. He died of wound(s) at Chattanooga, Tennesse, November 30, 1863. His mother, Elizabeth Baxter, applied for a pension April 22 1867 which was approved and issued as Certificate #104550, presumably in Ohio.

Morris's name is on Panel #1 in the Cuyahoga County Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument, Public Square, Cleveland, Ohio and inscribed on the south side of the monument of the 7th Regiment, ohio Volunteer Infantry located at Woodland Cemetery, 6901 Woodland Avenue also in Cleveland.
