Norma Fontenla
Birth: Jun. 28, 1930
Death: Oct. 10, 1971

Dancer. One of the most remarkable figures of the Argentine contemporary dance. She danced with figures like Margot Fonteyn and Rudolph Nureyev and was the main dancer at the Colón Theater of Buenos Aires. On October 10, 1971, she, her dance partner José Neglia and other seven dancers (Margarita Fernández, Carlos Schiaffino, Rubén Estanga, Martha Raspanti, Carlos Santamarina, Sara Bochkovsky and Antonio Zambrana)lost their lives when the plane which they were making a tour plunged into the Plata River, in the worst artistic tragedy in Argentine history. This tragic date has since been chosen to conmemorate the National Day of the Dancer. (bio by: 380W)
