James was born September 3, 1922, in Lancaster, Mo., the son of William E. Martin and Dora Singleton Martin. He married Helen Dailey on June 21, 1949 in Lancaster. She preceded him in death on January 24, 2001. Mr. Martin worked at for the Lunex Co., Pleasant Valley, Iowa, for 30 years, retiring in the late 1970s. Mr. Martin was an avid fisherman. He enjoyed walking and spending time with his family. James was a World War II U.S. Army veteran, receiving five Bronze Stars for campaigns in Northern France, Normandy, Ardennes, Central Europe and the Rhineland.
Survivors include his children and their spouses, Mary and Tom Maack, Milan, Bonnie and Gary Russell, Wasola, Mo.; grandchildren, Kristin, Kelly, Kimberly, Thomas and James; 15 great-grandchildren; sisters, Nora and her husband, Ray O' Neill, Delmar, Iowa, and Oral Noon, Scott City, Mo.
James was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Helen, and a great-grandson.
