Funeral Services for Vera Marie Coker were held Friday, December 28, at 2 p.m., at the Last Chance Baptist Church in Okemah, Interment followed at the Highland Cemetery. Vera Marie Cocker was born October 14, 1917, in Thayer, Missouri to Willie McNath and Mary Ruth (Russell) Arnold. She passed away peacefully Friday, December 21, in Okmulgee at the age of 90.
On October 14, 1933 she and Edgar Isac Coker were married in Shamrock, Oklahoma. Together they raised four children. She lived her life for God, her family, and her
many friends. She was the matriarch of a large and extended family. Vera was a loving and compassionate person who always had time and kind words for anyone who needed them. She was a talented seamstress, wonderful cook, and a gardener. Her hobbies were reading, fishing, traveling, and being with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She had been a resident of Weleetka since 1940, and her family moved to the Okemah area in 1952. Vera worked in retail in Weleetka and Okemah for over 40 years. She was the manager of the M&M .5 & .10 for ower 30 years when she retired. Vera was a Charter Member of the Weleetka Free Will Baptist Church where she was a Sunday School teacher. While in Weleetka, she was a Cub Scout leader, elementary classroom mother, and visited and cared for the sick.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Edgar Isac Coker; her parents, one brother, Doyle Arnold; three sisters, Lida Williams, Melba Coker, and Neta
Jones, a nephew she raised, Dale Coker and one grandson-in-law, Anthony Battaglia.
She is survived by her sons, Nolan Coker and wife Chloe and Larry Coker and wife Dianna; one daughter, Marilyn Smith and husband Mac; six grandchildren, Lee and Jeanette Coker, Kelley and Kevin Milton, Craig and Laura Smith, Allison Smith, Melissa Battaglia, and Lara and Ted Goldmann; nine great-grandchildren, Katie Langwell, Caroline Milton, Rafe and Chelsea Coker, Leah Smith, Antonio and Natalie Battaglia, and Dan and Dillon Goldmann.
Vera/Mother/Mimi, will be remembered as a loving and strong influence, a role model, and pal to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She will be deeply missed.
Serving as active pallbearers were Craig Smith, Antonio Battaglia, Lee Coker, Rafe Coker, Kevin Milton, Lenny Walker, Leon McLain, and Ronnie Coker.
Honorary bearers include Ted Goldmann, Dan Goldmann, Dillon Goldmann, and Tony Long.
Services were under the direction of Parks Brothers Funeral Home and officiated by Rev. Don Baker and assisted by Dr. Roger Thompson.
In lieu of flowers; donations can be made to the Last Chance Baptist Church in memory of Vera.
