Founder of Belchers' Sugar Refinery in St. Louis, Missouri. From fifteen to twenty years of age he was a clerk in his father's store in Massachusetts. Soon afterwards, he went to New York and became a clerk in a wholesale grocery store. After a couple of years he began selling books at auctions and traveled throughout the country as a result. In 1840 he embarked in the business of sugar refining in St. Louis. His refinery became one of the largest in the country as well as being one of the most important manufacturing establishments in St. Louis and the West. He later went to Chicago and established a sugar refinery there.
