Kenneth was born to John and Rose Marks Kaeberle, who were married on March 30, 1921. John came to America from a German colony in Russia. He also served in the Army during World War I.

In 1930 Topeka, Kansas Kenneth's father was supporting the family as shoe repair man in a shoe store. When Kenneth was around 12 years old, his little sister, Vera, died.

By 1940 his father was working as a janitor at the Central Building to support his family of 7 children at the time.
