His father, Middleton Garrett, died in 1831;
The family (consisting of his mother and three sons) came to Muscatine County, Iowa in June of 1853.
Mr. Garrett married Ruth E. Vincent in 1858. She was a native of Frederick County, Virginia. She died in 1870;
They had six children, four still living in 1879:

Luellen J.
Louis F.;
He owns 170 acres, which he purchased in 1867.
He was a Civil War Veteran.
