He was born as Jan Bos in 1875 at the country village Spijk in the northeastern part of the Dutch northeastern province Groningen. His parents are iron smith Jan Bos (29 y) and Grietje Siekman.

On 19 April 1893 Jan (17 y) and his parents, laborer Jan Bos and Grietje Bos, and his siblings Aaltje (16), Klaas (13), Anna (9), Adolf (7) and Martje (4) arrived on the SS Maasdam at New York, Ellis Island. Their last residence place in the Netherlands was Spijk, a country village in the former municipality Bierum, since 1990 part of mun. Delfzijl, province Groningen, and their destination is Bozeman, seat of Gallatin County, in the southwestern part of Montana.

In 1900 black smith John (26 y) resided with his parents, farmer John (57 y) and Gertie Bos (53 y), and his siblings Henry (23 y NL, black smith), Alice (23 y NL), Anna (21 y NL), Clauzon (18 y NL, farm laborer), Adolph (16 y New York, Irish) and Martha (13 y Iowa) at Manhattan, Gallatin County, Montana.

On 5 November 1901 John Bos, 26 y and residing at Manhattan, married there to Jennie Van Dyken, 21 y, also born in the Dutch province Groningen and residing at Manhattan too. Witnesses are their fathers John H Bos and Lambertus Van Dyken.

In 1920 John (44 y) and his wife Jennie (39 y) Boss and their children Grace (17 y), Lambertus (16 y), Agnes (13 y), Alice (11 y), Peter (9 y), Hanna (7 y), John H (6 y) and Johanna M (3 y) resided in Galatin County, Montana

In 1930 John (54 y) and his wife Jennie (49 y) and their children Bert (26 y), Peter (19 y), Hannah (17 y), John H (16 y), J Marjorie (13 y) and Martha (9 y) resided at West Gallatin, Gallatin County, Montana.

In 1940 John Bos (64 y) resided with his wife Jennie (59 y) and their children Peter (29 y), John H J (26 y), Johanna M (23 y) and Martha (19 y) at the Dutch settlement Holland, later on called Amsterdam-Churchill, Gallatin County, Montana.

John died in June 1951 at the age of 75 years in Gallatin County, Montana. His wife Jennie died there a few months later, in December, at the age of 71 years.
