|Birth: ||Apr. 1, 1880|
|Death: ||Mar. 16, 1960|
He was born as Gerrit de Leeuw aboard his father's ship which was moored in the Dedemsvaart canal at Avereest, province Overijssel, Netherlands. He is the second of ten children, named for his maternal grandfather Gerrit de Groot.
In August/September he emigrated with his parents, brother Klaas (Claus) and sister Trijntje (Trena) to the USA. Here his given name Gerrit was changed to Hiet(t) and his surname was adapted from De Leeuw (= The Lion) to DeLeeuw.
In 1884 the family settled in Lyman, a small agricultural community in Wayne County in the southeast of Utah. In June 1900 Hiet is there a sheperd on his parents' own farm. In 1910 he still lives at their homefarm at Lyman with his mother and is a sheperd at a stock ranch. Later on he becomes an independant cattlekeeper and farmer at Lyman/Bicknell, where he had a farm which lied approximately a half mile from his brother Hyrum's farm.
In August 1918 Hiet married in Richfield, Sevier County, to the 15 years younger Zelma Virtue McClellan and had with her a son, Carl, and a daughter, Carma.
In 1920 Hiet lives with his wife Zelma, son Carl and mother Mary in Bicknell. In 1930 he lived there too, then with his wife and two children.
Hiet sells in 1935 his farm and moves to Spanish Fork, Utah County. He works in construction until his retirement at the age of 73 years.
