Composer, pianist and musicologist. He is also known for being a descendant of Vlad Tepez, voivode of Walachia and Bukovina, otherwise known as Dracula. Born in the former northern Bukovina, he received his diploma in piano at the Conservatory of the hometown. In 1938, Vlad moved to Italy, where four years later graduated in Composition at the Conservatory of Santa Cecilia in Rome. During his career he held several prestigious assignments in various Italian musical institutions, such as the Artistic Director and President of the Accademia Filarmonica Romana, the Teatro Comunale in Florence, Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della RAI Torino, the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, and the superintendent of the Teatro dell 'Opera di Roma. He received numerous international awards including the appointment as a member of the Academie voor Koninlijke Wetenschappen, Letteren en Schone Kunsten of Belgium, and the appointment as Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres of the Académie des Arts et des Lettres in France. He was also the author of many works of symphonic and chamber music, soundtracks for films, ballet and theater, as well as several publications of Musicology. Vlad died at the age of 93 of natural causes.
