He served in the U.S. Navy before beginning his career as an accountant for the Federal Bureau of Engraving and Printing.
He is survived by his wife of 15 years, Margaret Davis Walbert of Virginia Beach; two sons, David Walbert of Woodford and William Walbert of Fort Belvoir; a daughter, Donna Dawley of Virginia Beach; a stepson, Earl E. Sutton of Antioch, Calif.; a stepdaughter, Nancy Shaw of Palm Springs, Calif.; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Burial was held in Chestertown, Md. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Virginia Beach Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 945, Virginia Beach, VA 23451.
