George Hayward was the son of Job Hayward (1815-1856) and Sarah Walters Hayward Nicholas (1818-1877). His parents married in 4 July 1835 at St. James, Trowbridge, Wiltshire, England. Both were "of this parish."

His parents are found in the 1841 UK Census in Hammill, Bedwelty, Abergavenny, Monmouthshire, Wales with their two eldest children, William and Sarah. Parents are found in the 1851 UK Census in Aberystruth, Abergavenny, Monmouthshire, Wales with six children including George age 5. It appears that his father worked at the Ebbn Vale Iron Works. It is worth noting that Scranton, PA where they later lived also had many iron and steel works.

Because they were found in Wales in the 1841 and 1851 UK Censuses, it was assumed that his parents were Welsh. They were not. Rather they were from Wiltshire, England where they married in Trowbridge in 1835 . Job was baptized in North Bradley, Wiltshire 21 May 1815. His parents, William and Hannah (Rogers) Hayward, married in 1804 in North Bradley. Note that George's eldest brother was also William. Grandfather William was a weaver.

Sarah Walters was born in Trowbridge, Wiltshire according to the 1851 UK Census. Her baptism record has not yet been found.

Job and Sarah's eldest child William was born in Trowbridge. Their second child Sarah was born in Warwick, Warwickshire in 1837. They arrived in Monmouthshire between 1837 after Sarah was born and 1841 when the census was taken. All other children were born in Wales except the youngest were born in Wales. The youngest was born in New York.

His family immigrated from Wales in 1851 on the Constellation from Liverpool. They ended up in the Scranton, PA area. His father died in 1856 and his mother remarried Obediah Nichols before 1860. He was also from Wales. In the 1860 Census George is listed as Hayward, but his younger siblings were listed as Nicholas.

His mother left a will leaving a life interest in her real estate and her personal property "including notes and money" to her husband. After his death, the real estate was to be sold and divided equally among her children. This implies that she had financial resources separate from her husband.

George is found in the 1860 US Census with his mother and step-father in PA. He was not been found in the 1870 Census.

He moved to Jersey City as a young man. He married Margaret Duffy there in 1867. They lived in Jersey City, then in Pennsylvania, and then again in Jersey City. In the 1880 Census, the family lived in Scranton, PA.

Children were:
* Adelaide Daudt 1869 - 1950; married Philip Daudt 1906; lived in Jersey City and Wayne, NJ.
* Margaret Lyons 1870-1948; married John P. Lyons, her sister's widower, in 1921; moved to Chicago
* Ellen Lyons 1873-1920; married John P. Lyons 1901; moved to Chicago; her eldest son was George Hayward Lyons.
* George W. Hayward 1875-1887
* Caroline/Carrie Meseck 1880-1963; married Joseph Meseck; lived Mahwah, NJ
* May Hayward 1881-1956; never married; stenographer; lived in Jersey City
* William Henry Hayward 1883-1885

He was a machinist as was his stepfather and brothers.
