H. S. Ash, 89, Dies This Morning

Had Been In Failing Health For Some Time

Hiram S. [amuel] Ash, 89, died at his home in Bedford this morning. While he had been in failing health for some time, he had been active in the management of the Taylor County Service Company, handling the local telephone business, until the first of this week when L. [ewis] Guy Young succeeded him as manager. Mr. Ash had been down on the streets every day the past few days, and was apparently in his usual health and good spirits last evening when his daughter, Mrs. Young, called on him.

Born in Cobourg [Ontario], Canada, March 30, 1858, he came to the United States in 1882, working in the railroad car factories in Detroit, and with a building contractor in Marion, Indiana. His education consisted of schooling in Petersborough [Ontario], Canada and the University of Nebraska, Lincoln.

He came to Clearfield in the early 90's, operating a grain elevator there at first and later serving the town as superintendent of schools from 1891 until 1899. Mr. Ash was married in Clearfield, December 25, 1894 to Ida I. [sabel] Peltier, and they moved to Bedford to make their home soon after 1900 when he was elected county superintendent of schools. After his term of office he entered the telephone business in Bedford, spending the rest of his life in this field.

In addition to his interest in the local telephone business, he helped re-organize a telephone company at Chariton, Iowa, and was a member of its board of directors at the time of his death.

Active in community affairs, Mr. Ash served on the city council of Bedford, on the school board, as an officer in the community club, and as an elder in the Bedford Presbyterian church.

His hobbies consisted in gardening, raising of flowers, and in rebuilding and improving his home and business.

Mrs. Ash preceded him in death some years ago.

Funeral services will be held Saturday forenoon, 11 o'clock, in the Bedford Presbyterian Church
