The obituaries were then read by H. Thurston, as follows:
Of all the exercises of this day on which we have met to live over the past, and to enjoy the pleasure of greeting those who in the early history of this county were friends and neighbors, engaged not only in providing homes for themselves, but also in establishing society upon those principles of Industry, Integrity, and Economy, which have not failed to create a prosperous community, there are none more important, no exercises more interesting, than taking notice of those who during the year have "rested from their labors." It is fitting that we make some note of their work, and of their departure. They do not need our eulogy, but if in remembering them we are taught to emulate their virtues, we may be enabled so to live, with those who come after us, may remember with pleasure and gratitude the "First Settlers of Freeborn county." The first we shall notice is:
