Alexander Houssiel was born, 1/25/1832, in York, PA and he enlisted as a private with the 87th Pennsylvania Infantry, 9/14/1861, and he served until 10/13/1864. The 87th was assigned to guard duty on the Northern Central Railroad until May of 1862 then saw action in the Shenandoah Valley, the Wilderness, VA, Spotsylvania Court House, VA, North Anna River, VA, Cold Harbor, VA, and the siege of Petersburg, VA until July, 1864. The regiment moved back to the Shenandoah Valley at Charles Town, WV, the battle of Opequon, VA, and Fisher's Hill, VA. The veterans were mustered out 10/13/1864.
Alexander married Catherine Olewiler, 10/27/1857, in York County, PA. Catherine died after 1900 in York County and Alexander died, 2/12/1910 in York, PA. They were both buried in Lebanon Reformed Cemetery, Felton, PA.
One of Alexander and Catherine's daughters, Elizabeth R. married Charles W. Pfaltzgraff, a cousin of the founders of the famous York County pottery company.
