It was wedding bells for Samuel Handy and Jane Crow on March 25, 1822 in Illinois! Samuel was a plain, unpretentious farmer, an honest man, and an excellent family provider, having entered land and improved a farm as an early pioneer of York, Clark County, Illinois. Their family lived a simple, farming life in Illinois with at least four daughters: Amanda Mary Dolson (maiden name Handy, Amanda married David H. Dolson on March 26, 1848 in Clark County, Illinois. David was born on August 20, 1818 and he died on February 5, 1878.), Nancy (maiden name Handy) Malone, Naomi (maiden name Handy) Brown, and Louisa Handy; and two sons: Austin L. Handy and Albert Gallatin/Galiton Handy. In 1855, Samuel and Jane sold their Illinois farm and they moved to Arcata, Humboldt County, California. They then spent their later years in Arcata, Samuel living in the home of their son Albert Gallatin/Galiton Handy and his family after he lost his precious Jane. Jane and Samuel's granddaughter, Annie Elizabeth Parton (Albert's married daughter), and her husband John A. Parton, Sr. are also interred in the First Addition section at Greenwood Cemetery, as are Thomas Henry Parton and his wife Catherine Parton.

Several IGI (International Genealogical Index) files record: Samuel's father was Thomas Handy and he died on January 24, 1824, being buried the same place he died, Clark County, Illinois. Samuel's mother was Sarah Dolson, born in about 1766 in Marlboro County, New York, and died December 6, 1850 in Fountain County, New York. Thomas and Sarah were married on August 24, 1783 in North Hampton County, Pennsylvania. One IGI file records that Thomas Handy's father was Dr. Thomas Hinde (this generation may mark when the spelling of the surname changed), Find A Grave memorial # 119115621, and he was born on July 19, 1734 in Oxfordshire, England and died September 28, 1828 in Newport, Campbell County, Kentucky. This same IGI file records that Thomas Handy's mother was Mary Todd Hubbard (the second wife of Thomas Hinde), Find A Grave memorial # 131735382, and she was born in about 1746 in King and Queen County, Virginia, she died December 8, 1830, Newport, Campbell County, Kentucky, and she married Thomas Hinde on September 24, 1767 in Virginia. Thomas Hinde was first married to Ann Black and she was born in about 1745; they married on November 6, 1764 in New York but it unknown whether this union produced any children

[Note: It may be that there was one generation of Handy/Hinde individuals in between Dr. Thomas Hinde and Thomas Handy (died January 24, 1824). Another possibility is that there was one generation of Handy individuals in between Samuel Handy and Thomas Handy (died on January 24, 1824); this is being researched and therefore some information is subject to change.]

Samuel had many siblings! According to several IGI files for Thomas Handy and his wife Sarah Dolson, Samuel's brothers were: Thomas Handy, Stephen D. Handy, Joseph Handy, Elijah Handy, and Vincent Handy; and Samuel's sisters were: Polly Handy, Hannah Handy, Sarah Handy, Isabella Handy, Angeline Handy and Eliza Handy.

[Note: Another possible male sibling (who, if he really was a sibling of Samuel's would have been the first born male), is mentioned in a different IGI file: John Handy. John Handy was born on October 18, 1788 in Tioga County, New York, and he died on May 5, 1847 in Clark County, Illinois. John married Mary Polly Williamson on November 17, 1808; Mary was born in about 1790, possibly in New York. On Angeline (maiden name Handy) Pease's memorial, it is written that she was the daughter of John Handy and Mary Polly Williamson. There is conflicting information regarding the birth parents of Angeline Handy, Isabella Handy, and Thomas Handy from several different IGI files and this is being researched. Some preliminary information written on this memorial for Samuel is subject to change.]

Possible details of Samuel's brothers and sisters are below, but some may be subject to change as details from several IGI files at familysearch.org are cross-compared to each other and then compared with other records. Exact familial connections are unsure; however, most of the individuals listed are indeed parts of the Handy family -- "Who's on first? What's on second." Heh!):

Brothers: Thomas Handy was born on September 7, 1794 in Chemung Town, Montgomery County, New York, and he died on September 28, 1859 in Albion County, New York (he was living in Yates, Orleans County, New York at the time of his tragic death when a canal bridge collapsed, killing twenty or more); Thomas married Ruth Ann Tefft. Stephen D. Handy married Margaret Dixon before 1829 in Fort Harrison, Indiana. Joseph Handy was born in about 1800 in Chemung Town, New York, and he married Mary Cox on May 31, 1823 in Clark County, Illinois. Elijah Handy was born in about 1803 in Chemung Town, New York. Vincent Handy was born on October 8, 1810 in Chemung Town, New York, he died on December 2, 1837 in Clark County, Illinois, and he is buried in the John Handy Burying Ground in Clark County, Illinois; Vincent married Melinda Hogue on September 12, 1830 in Clark County, Illinois.

Sisters: Polly Handy was born in about 1805 in Chemung Town, New York and she died in Clark County, Illinois. Hannah Handy was born in Tioga County, New York, and she married Robert F. Layton on February 14, 1830 in Clark County, Illinois. Sarah Handy was born in about 1808 in Chemung Town, New York and she married Porter Riggs on October 10, 1829. Isabella Handy was born in about 1815 or 1816 in Clark County, Illinois and she married Reuben Prevo on October 1, 1837 in Clark County, Illinois. Angeline Handy was born in about 1812 in Indiana and she married Louis Pease on August 23, 1832 in Clark County, Illinois; she died in York Precinct, Clark County, Illinois, and she is buried in Shawler Cemetery in Clark County, Illinois. Eliza Handy was born in about 1818 in Clark County, Illinois and she married Samuel Archer on July 23, 1842 in Clark County, Illinois.

Of interest is that Samuel's final resting place, although presumably unmarked, is beside his wife Jane Handy. Jane's grave marker was made to be an upright marker and planted in the soil; however, it is laying flat. It may be that Samuel Handy's grave marker is the same marker, and that his inscription is perhaps on the opposite side (unreadable, as it is the side on the ground) of Jane's marker. Jane's interesting marker reads:

"To the memory of
JANE HANDY,
the consort of
Samuel Handy,
Born Nov. 7, 1796;
Died Aug. 26, 1864,
Aged 67 Y'rs 9 mo's,
