Jacob Allman joined Flat Creek Baptist Church by statement of faith in 1858. He was ordained a deacon in 1866 and remained one until death. He is buried in the church cemetery. The following obituary was recorded in the minutes of Flat Creek Baptist Church on May 31, 1879:

"Brother Allman was borned in Burk County N.C. (now McDowell County)February 19, 1810. The son of Lewis and Polly Allman. Moved from thence to this county from young, shortly after married Polley Estep with whom he lived until the day of his death. Soon after his marriage joined the Baptist Church under Isaac Tillery. Some division arising. Said church was disolved, he then came to the Flat Creek Church and gave satisfaction in the year 1858 and remained in this church until his death which occurred Nov. 22, 1878, Sixteen years of this time he Served as deacon of this church and died at the age of 68 years 9 months and 3 days. This departed an exemplary Christian an affectionate husband a Kind Father a good neighbor and a truly respected Citizen. Leaving a wife and nine children To Mourn their great loss."

Jacob Allman donated the land and helped build the first schoolhouse in the area and wanted his children to be able to get an education. It was called Flat Creek School. Present day North Buncombe High School is near where this old schoolhouse once stood.
