Joseph was the son of Samuel Cantrell and Mary A. Powell. In his obituary published in the Huntington Long Islander it notes the following: "Joseph Cantrell died Friday, May 21, at his home in this village at the age of 65 years. he was born in New York February 15, 1844. His home was in NY until about thirty years ago when he moved to Kings Park. Some years ago he removed to this village where his residence has been for the last twenty years. At the breaking out of the Civil war he enlisted in the 7th Regiment, N. Y. V. He soon rose to the rank of lieutenant and served to the end of the war in the same regiment. Mr. Cantrell was in many of the principal battles of the war and passed through them unhurt...June 20, 1865, Mr. Cantrell was married to Miss Mary Josephine Verdin, of NYC, who survives him." They had thirteen children together all who lived to adulthood. The funeral service was held a his residence and he Rev. Myron D. Fuller of the First Baptist church of Kings Park officiated.
