Robert was the bachelor son of Daniel Phelps Chaney and Susan Snowden Chaney. He worked as a newspaper printer, editor and publisher. Mr. Chaney founded the Irvine Times newspaper on January 1, 1920.
He relocated to Hazard, Kentucky, to work on another newspaper. He was found dead, in that city, beside the Kentucky River. A coroner's inquest was held. The jury ruled Mr. Chaney's death was the result of drowning, due to homicide. After the verdict was recorded, his remains were sent to Estill County for funeral services and interment.
