He was a 1946 graduate of Osceola High School, Osceola, Nebraska. He served as president of his high school class and lettered in football and basketball. Upon his return from World War II, he enrolled in the College of Engineering, University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
He served in the U.S. Army as a private during World War II and was stationed in Japan. During the Korean War, he was recalled to service with the U.S. Army in 1950.
He was employed with the Gates Corporation of Denver, Colorado, as an engineer. He was a member of St. Timothy's Lutheran Church, Omaha, Nebraska where he served on the church council, three terms as president.
He also served as President and Building Chairman for St. Timothy's new Church and Campus.
He enjoyed working on home improvement projects. He was an enthusiastic sports fan (especially Cornhusker football), an outdoor enthusiast and was an accomplished and competitive golfer.
