Burnsville - Grace McInturff Ayers, 83, of Burnsville, died peacefully Tuesday, March 7, 2006, at her new home in Winston Salem. A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter of the late Ira and Bessie England McInturff. Preceding her in death were her husband, Clyde Ayers; two brothers, George and Porter McInturff; and a sister, Billie McInturff.

Grace was raised in the Indian Creek Community, attended Bald Creek School and was married to her husband, Clyde, in 1941. She served as a volunteer during WWII after which she and Clyde returned to North Carolina living in various cities and eventually returning to Yancey County. She served 5 terms as Register of Deeds of Yancey County from 1964 until 1984. She was actively involved in the Democratic Party efforts in Yancey County. Upon her retirement, she and Clyde traveled the U.S. and enjoyed her hobbies of gardening, quilting, knitting, reading and volunteer work. She enjoyed helping her neighbors with their needs and developing friendships.

Surviving are her son, Jerry and his wife, Laura, of Winston Salem; three grandchildren, Hillary Peterson of Winston Salem, John W. Ayers of Nashville, Tenn. and Charles E. Ayers of Winston Salem; and a great granddaughter, Chloe Peterson of Winston Salem.

The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the First Presbyterian Church of which she was a member. The Rev. Maggie Lauterer will officiate. Entombment will follow in the Ashelawn Gardens of Memory.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday at the church.

Memorials may be made to the National Kidney Foundation or American Heart Association.

Following the services, the family will be at her home at 20 Galley Street in Burnsville.
