---One of the old pioneers has gone. Grandma Allen died at her home 1 1/2 miles northwest of Yates Center on Sunday evening July 26, 1886, aged 75 years, 8 months and 27 days. Her maiden name was Margaret Murphy and she was born in Kentucky. She moved with her parents to Illinois and from there to Missouri in 1838. When living in Missouri she married John C. Allen, Oct. 1, 1840. She was a mother of ten children, six of whom are still living, to wit: William, of Oklahoma, Robert and Green Allen of Yates Center, Mrs. Sarah Blanchard, of Guthrie, Okla., Mrs. Elizabeth Cook and Mrs. Cynthia Cannady, of Yates Center. Her husband enlisted as Lieut. of 22 Mo. Vol., and served his country during the late civil war. He lost a leg at the battle of Macon, Missouri. She and her husband came to Kansas and settled on the present homestead in 1865, where her husband died June 30, 1875. She united with the Christian Church in Missouri over 61 years ago and her life was a daily example of christian charity, benevolence and good works. She said little concerning religion but lived much. She was ever the constant friend of the poor, and considering her limited means perhaps no one in Woodson county ever did more to aid those who were unfortunate, than did Grandma Allen. The funeral services were conducted from the family residence by Elder G. H. Lamb of the Christian church on Monday evening July 27, and she was laid to rest in Graceland cemetery. Her children to the third generation followed her to the grave and many of her old friends wept around her grave. Thus an old pioneer, a good women, a faithful christian, a kind and affectionate mother and neighbor is gone. Peace to her ashes.

NOTE: I have several sources that give her birth year as being in 1823 while her stone has 1820. If 1820 is correct it would make her born the same year as her sister, Rebecca. I have known dates on cemetery stones to contain errors!
