She was born at St. Mary's Hospital in Madison, WI, to Floyd W. & Isabelle (Walsh) Duffee. She attended Randall Elementary School and West High School in Madison. After graduating from West High School in 1939, Pat attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She received a Bachelor's degree on May 27, 1944 majoring in home economics. After graduation she was employed as a case worker for the Red Cross in Chicago, IL. While at University of Wisconsin-Madison, Pat met Paul Hirsbrunner from Darlington, and they were united in marriage on Feb.17, 1945, at St. Raphael's Cathedral in Madison. During World War II Pat and Paul lived in Cape May, NJ, where Paul was stationed at the Marine base before being sent to the South Pacific. They later lived in Madison, Platteville, Belleville, and Lancaster. In 1965, Pat received a Master's degree in Counseling and Guidance from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. She was later employed by the Grant County Department of Human Services as a social worker. In 1972, Pat and Paul moved out of state to Arizona, hoping to escape the frigid Wisconsin winters. Eventually they settled in Corpus Christi, TX, where Paul was employed by the State of Texas. While in Corpus Christi, she operated a reservation service for area bed and breakfasts. This people-to-people contact was her true calling and joy. She met many interesting people through this venue over the years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Hirsbrunner; an infant son, David; and a son-in-law, Ted Day. Pat was always a political person and was a delegate to the Democratic State Convention in Austin, TX, when Governor Ann Richards was in office. Over the years, she also did volunteer work for the Red Cross, battered women's shelters, food pantries, Planned Parenthood and Spohn Hospital. Pat was a member of the Unitarian Church for many years. A Memorial service was held on Wednesday, June 30, at the funeral home. For those who prefer, memorials may be given to a charity of your choice. Erickson Funeral Home, Darlington, WI assisted with arrangements.
