Mrs. J.H. Bonnney Dies Suddenly from Stroke of Apoplexy at Winter Home
Mrs. Winn Was With Her
Two Had Spent Their Winters in Florida for Many Years—Was Past Four Score in Age

A telegram from Deland, Fla., this morning brought news of the sudden death of Mrs. Betsey Bonney, a well known Rockford woman, who, as had been her s for years. Was spending the winter in the south.

The telegram was from Mrs. Bonney’s step-mother, Mrs. Sarah Winn, and was meager in particulars. It stated that death was due to a stroke of apoplexy and that a letter giving details on the way. It is believed that the body will be brought back here for burial.

Mrs. Bonney was the widow of James H. Bonney, who died in 1891. She was a native of Maine, where she was born 82 years ago. After her marriage to Mr. Bonney they moved to Wisconsin but soon after the civil war came to Rockford and this city had since been her home. She was the owner of a fine residence at 203 West street. For a decade or more she had spent the winters in Florida, returning to Rockford as soon as the weather became settled in the spring.

Mrs. Bonney was a member of the Second Congregational church and a woman of excellent qualities. Her death will be mourned by a wide circle of friends.

Word was received this morning by relatives and friends of the sudden death of Mrs. Betsie Sylvester Bonney, who passed away last night at Deland, Florida, where she had gone this winter with her step daughter, Mrs. J.H. Winn, because of her health. The latter is recovering from a very sever attack of illness.

Mrs. Bonney’s death was sudden and unexpected, coming as the result of a stroke of apoplexy. No definite information was included in the telegrams received. The friends being notified that letters would follow, and that Mrs. Winn would start for Rockford with the remains to have the body interred here.

The deceased was 82 years of age and was born in Maine. She was married in 1846 to James H.
Bonney, who had been living in the west, but returned to the east just before his marriage.
They decided to remove to the west and settled on a farm near Portage, Wis., where they lived from 1846 to 1866. During that time, Mr. Bonney became prominent in Wisconsin politics and was at one time chairman of the board of supervisors in his county and was also a member of the legislature during the time of the civil war.

In 1866 he removed to Rockford, and retired from active life. He passed away in 1891 at his home, 204 West Street. Mrs. Bonney continued to make her home in Rockford. Her husband had been one of the organizers of the Rockford Burial Case Company, was long a director of the concern and for a time its president.
