One of seven sons of Thomas F Hurney & Mary Elizabeth O'Day. Joe married Katie Gallagher in 1911. For 15 years he was a transportation specialist with the Defense Dept. where he mapped out routes for the return of soldiers killed in WWII and the Korean Confict. He worked in railway transportation for over 40 years. Except for a brief period in Chicago, he was a life long resident of the District of Columbia. Joe was the father of Joseph A Hurney,jr and the grandfather of 3. He was the brother of Fr Francis J Hurney who was for many years the pastor of Immaculate Conception Church. While Joe & Katie had only one son, they also raised the 3 children of Katie's sister Fannie. The 3 Potter children lost both of their parents while still quite young.
