Lovina May (Videto) Benjamin, 101, of Battle Creek died Monday, September 7, 2009 at The Heritage Assisted Living Center, where she resided. She was born July 14, 1908 at Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids, MI. Her parents were William E. and Mina (Butcher) Videto. They moved to Battle Creek from Bath, Michigan in 1924, so Lovina could attend Battle Creek Academy, where she graduated in 1927. She attended Emanuel Missionary College (now Andrews University) at Berrien Springs, MI for one year.
On May 30, 1929, she was married to Ernest E. Benjamin from Bath, England. They started "The Benjamin Press" in their home on Champion Street, which is now located at 380 West Vanburen and is still owned and operated by her son, Robert E. Benjamin, Sr. Lovina worked part-time in printing with her husband. She was a member of the Battle Creek Seventh-Day Adventist Tabernacle for 85 years, where she sang in the choir and served in leadership positions at the church. For 46 years, she served as a Red Cross Volunteer at the Battle Creek Sanitarium Hospital and Battle Creek Health System.
Her husband, Ernest E. Benjamin, son, John E. Benjamin, granddaughter, Roberta Benjamin, grandson, Timothy Benjamin and brother, Ivan Videto, had all been laid to rest. Lovina is survived by a daughter, Beverly E. and Ralph L. Benedict, and a son, Robert E. Benjamin and Patricia Ann all of Battle Creek; three grandsons, Dr. Dennis H. and Eddie Benedict of Jackson, MI, Todd and Connie Benjamin and Robert E. Benjamin, Jr. of Ionia, MI; two granddaughters, Denise and James C. Carter of Waynesville, OH, Laurie and Stephen Erickson of Kewa, New Guinea; step-grandchildren, Kim Anderson, Terri and Tim Pieratt and Jodi and Rich Trimble; nine great-grandsons, four great-granddaughters; two great-great-grandsons; two step-great-grandsons, four step-great-granddaughters; and three step-great-great-granddaughters.
At the request of the family, friends may call after 6:00 p.m. today (Tuesday) at the Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home where they will be received 6:00-8:00 p.m. Funeral services to celebrate Lovina's life will be held at the funeral home 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 9, 2009. Interment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.
