Murlene Giddings Adkins
BOSSiER ClTY, LA - Murlene
Giddings Adkins, age 84, a native of
Red River Parish and long-time resi-
dent of Bossier City, died on August
19, 2004 from complications of a
stroke suffered last April. Mrs. Adkins
was born on January 27, 1920 on a
farm near what was then the communi-
ty of Methvin, the sixth and youngest
child of William Chesley Giddings and
Mary Elizabeth Tomlin Giddings. She
attended Louisiana Normal College
(now NSU) until 1939 and, during the
war years, worked in a variety of ad-
ministrative capacities in Little Rock,
AR, Los Angeles, CA, and Shreve-
port. in February 1947 she married
Grover C. Adkins, also a native of
Red River Parish, and they made their
home and raised their three children
in Bossier City. After a hiatus of nearly
thirty years, she returned to college
and received her Bachelor of Educa-
tion degree at Louisiana Tech in May
1967. She finished her professional
career as a Teacher at Airline High
School in Bossier City where she
taught courses in the business curricu-
lum until her retirement in 1980.
Mrs Adkins was an active member
of the Bossier community throughout
her adult life. She was a charter mem-
her and past president of the Junior
Mothers Club of Bossier, and also an
active member arid long-time Sunday
School Teacher at the First Baptist
Church of Bossier and, in recent
years, at Airline Baptist Church.
In addition to her husband, Mrs.
Adkins is survived by her three chil-
dren and their spouses, Cari Adkins
and Dianne Balfour of New York City,
Mike and Eileen Adkins of Shreveport
and Becky arid Richard Brantley of
Huston; her four grandchildren, Emily
Adkins of Baton Rouge. Julie Adkins
of Atlanta, Georgia, Ciaire Adkins of
Shreveport and Wes Brantley of Rus-
ton; and three sisters-in-law and nu-
merous nieces and nephews from the
Giddings and Adkins families. "
The family of Mrs. Adkins will re-
ceive visitors at Rose-Neath Funeral
Home Bossier City between the hours
of 4 and 6 p.m. on Sunday, August
22. Following a private interment, a
memorial service to celebrate her life
will be he!d at Airline Baptist Church
in Bossier City at 11 a.m. on Monday,
August 23. Officiating will be Dr.
Damon Vaughn and Bro. Billy Pierce.
