Harold is the fourth child of Chancy Leach and Sylvia Riley Leach. He and his older sister, Evelyn, passed away in a fire when she was only 1 year old.
TAKEN FROM THE KALKASKIAN NEWSPAPER OF JAN. 28, 1915:
BURNED IN THEIR HOUSE. FIRE DESTROYS HOME OF CHAUNCY LEACH IN THIS TOWNSHIP. TWO LITTLE CHILDREN PERISH IN THE FLAMES, THEIR MOTHER UNABLE TO RESCUE THEM.
Yesterday morning at about 9 o'clock, the farm home of Mr. and Mrs. Chauncy Leach, located in this township across from Dan Vipond's farm, was destroyed by fire.
The details of the tragic affair are as follows: Mr. Leach was away at work, the older children at school and Mrs. Leach, busy with her household duties, had occasion to go to a spring about 20 rods away for a pail of water. To go to the spring in question takes one momentarily from sight of the house, and upon her return there from, and again coming into view of her house, Mrs. Leach was horrified to find the roof a mass of flames. The frantic mother realizing the peril of her children, hastened to the burning home, but when she reached the scene, the one-story frame structure was a seething mass of flames in the midst of which the hapless little ones were hopelessly imprisoned and beyond human aid, for it was impossible, so intense was the heat, for Mrs. Leach to reach them. Meantime neighboring farmers had arrived upon the scene, but like the mother they were prevented by the fierce heat from entering the home, which was speedily consumed together with the unfortunate little ones. When the flames had subsided the few charred remains were tenderly removed from the ruins, and brought to the L. M. Clapp's Undertaking rooms. The children were in different parts of the house when the mother left them but the remains of the little ones were together indicating that the little girl, Evaline, aged 4 yrs. had attempted to carry her baby brother Harold, aged 13 months, from the burning home.
The family is prostrated with grief over their terrible affliction, and have the heartfelt sympathies of all. The funeral will be held tomorrow, from Clapp's Chapel.
